Press Release
Regarded as a modern classic by many, the first generation Audi R8 V8 marked a new era for well-built, easy to live with, mid-engined supercars. Despite being launched in 2006, the R8 has stood the test of time and still looks and feels as fresh today as it did at launch.
In standard form, the R8’s exhaust has an excellent tone, generated by its high-revving Cosworth-derived 4.2 V8. That being said, the factory exhaust is very restrictive, making for a somewhat muted and disappointing final article. Not what you would expect from a car with such performance credentials.
Sheffield-based performance exhaust manufacturer, Cobra Sport, have developed a solution for this in the form of their recently launched Cat-Back exhaust system designed specifically for the first generation V8 model. This new exhaust is precision TIG-welded from T304 stainless steel and is fitted with valves that integrate with the vehicles factory configurations. The valves open and close depending on the vehicle’s RPM, so it stays subdued at idle but unleashes the full fury of its thunderous V8 soundtrack when revved to its 8500RPM redline. On average, throughout the rev range, Cobra Sport’s system is 12db louder than stock with zero motorway drone, making for a significant improvement without ruining the excellent drivability that the R8 is famed for. A noticeable improvement in power distribution higher up the rev range was experienced during testing, thanks to the free flowing performance exhaust setup. The Cobra Sport setup offers a 12kg (30%) weight saving over standard further enhancing the vehicle dynamics.
Cobra Sport’s system is designed to fit in conjunction with the R8’s standard tailpipes, but optional Carbon Fibre tips in O/E twin style are available should that be to the owner’s taste. These tips really finish off the rear end of the supercar, and look particularly superb on vehicle’s fitted with Audi’s optional Carbon Fibre Side Blade.
